  5. Acorn Launches Pocket Book

  7. Acorn Computers is launching its first Pocket Book computer.  
  8. The idea behind the Pocket Book is to provide a small
  9. portable computer that offers functionality aimed at serving
  10. the basic computing needs of every child and that is cheap
  11. enough for parents to purchase for their school children.

  13. The applications suite provided with the Pocket Book
  14. comprises a word processor, a database, a spreadsheet, a
  15. calculator and an alarm. There is also the option of adding
  16. further applications - such as a diary program via a solid
  17. state disc.  Choices are made from menus of options and each
  18. of the applications provided is self contained in its own
  19. window on the screen.

  21. The Pocket Book has an optional Archimedes link especially
  22. designed for easy transfer of information between it and
  23. Acorn's 32-bit RISC computers. The link software has been
  24. written in such a way as to make the Pocket Book appear on
  25. the desktop as just another directory viewer.

  27. In addition to the Archimedes link, there is also a fast
  28. serial port which allows access at 1.54Mbits/sec to other
  29. computers, modems and printers, and there is also a parallel
  30. printer link. On average, the two AA batteries -  which are
  31. readily available - give the Pocket Book some 80 hours of
  32. continuous use.
